The transportation. plan of <br />Gem Lake is also -intended to enhance a high quality mian-made and <br />I natural environment within and bordering the. -City. limits. <br />6.1 The Existing Roadway System <br />Themost:important component of the transportation system. within <br />Gem Lake for the foreseeable future will be the. street and highway <br />netw work hich will �ommddate both private and public motor <br />vehicles. The.funetional-classification and jurisdictional responsibility <br />for maintaining this system is. summarized in Tables 6 and 7. <br />f <br />6.1.1 Arterials <br />The most heavily traveled arterial route through the community is <br />U-S. Highway 61 which serves as a..major artery connecting Gem <br />Lake with White. Bear Lake and the more intensively developed <br />i portions of the metropolitan area to the south. The facility connects <br />with the liitgrAate beltway loop (1-494,1694) around. -the -Twin cities <br />i at a point -approximately one mile south of the City's corporate.limits. <br />The only other arterial within the community b County Road E which <br />forms. part of Gem Lake's southern corporate limits The facility <br />intersects with U.S. Highway 61 In the southeast portion. of Gem <br />Lake, serves'fhe.southem portion of White Bear Lake to the east, and <br />connects with I-35E located approximately �/4-mile west of the <br />western corporate limits of Gern'Lake. This latter facility rs..ibe only <br />"principal" arterial .near the City: <br />{ 6.1.2 Collectors <br />Collector streets include LAbore Road on the western. corporate <br />boundary,. Goos:tLake Road located in a southwestern -northeaster* <br />oriontadi n near the northern corporate limits of. the zom munity.,.and <br />Otter Lake Road :located in the northeastern portion of the. <br />community. <br />6.1,3 Local Streets <br />Theremaining roads'within the community can be classified as local <br />serving principally adjacent land uses.
