Appendix E
TRAIL IMPACT STUDY RESULTS
The Trail Commission is aware of concerns Vadnais Heights residents may have about trails in their
community. A survey of 101 midwest community Park and Recreation Departments found "that trails
within a .community have a far stronger positive impact than negative. Good design, signage and
enforcement of animal control regulations from the start will keep the trails from being misused?'"
Specifically this survey found:
1). There was NOT a significant increase in problems when trail systems INTERCONNECT.
2) Half of the respondents mentioned PET PROBLEMS as increasing in trail areas (presumably dog
droppings).
3) LITTER wasthe second biggest problem yet only 13% reported an increase in litter.
4) Incidents of VANDALISM, THEFT, TRESPASSING and ACCIDENTS actually decreased once
trails were in place.
5) PROPERTY VALUES. have typically increased, particularly within a block or two of the trail.
* A Survey on the Impact of Community Trail Systems,
March 28, 1992; Prior Lake Minnesota
17 May 5, 1994
