The City should make arrangements with the adjacent neighboring <br />communities to obtain water frgn.them for its citizens in case the <br />groundwater supply ever becomes contaminated. The City should <br />also have a list of contacts available .in case of an emergency. It <br />Would also be helpful to make available to. residents, steps that <br />should betaken in case of contami0ation to an individual's water <br />supply. <br />8.2 Water Supply Policies <br />The following policies have been established by the municipal <br />government of Gem Lake with regard to the water.5upply*for the <br />citizens and businesses of the community: <br />• Explore the possibility of developing a centralized water <br />distribution system within Gem Lake. The system might either. <br />be developed based on a well supply within Gem Lake or by <br />attachments to either the Vadnais Heights or White Bear .Lake <br />system or both. ' /' '� <br />• Water service should be`extended at the same time in the same <br />priorities as the sanitary:sewerage service in order to minimize <br />street reconstruction and traffic disruption. <br />• Explom the possibility of connecting only the commercial area of <br />Gem Lake to the Vadnais-Heights or W. Bear Lake water <br />distribution. systems. <br />■ Consider adopting a mandatory water-quanty testing program <br />for private wells. <br />• Develop an educational program promoting water conservation <br />measures.within the City of Gem take. <br />• Develop an emergency preparedness plan with regard to the <br />water. supply. <br />9.0 Housing Plan <br />9.1 Housing Supply <br />The housing supply in Geih Lake is ratifier homogeneous, The 1990 <br />census of .the population showed that. there were 143 housing units <br />within Gem .Lake with 1.40 -of those units being single-family <br />detached. Of those single-family detached housing units, 130 of <br />them were.owner occupied, with 10 units being renter Qccupied. <br />There were also. two- muitiple4amily dwelling units within Gem <br />Lake. Both of these units were duplexes. - <br />The 1990 census showed that only three.housing units were:vacant <br />at the time: One was for sale, one: was for seasonal recreational or <br />occasional use and the third -was listed as. other vacant.
