REQUEST FOR OUNCIE ACTION Date: 8/24/98
Item fro.: F-1
Department AP roval: Manager A. provai: Agenda Section:
- -- Reports and Recommendations
Item Description. Acceptance of Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program grant
BACKGROUND
In a City such as ours with a major retail component. the problem of auto thefts and thefts from
auto have a significant impact on both our economy and our quality= of life.
In 1997-98, the Roseville Police Department received a 1.065 grant for auto theft prevention
efforts and programs. This money has been used for nearly 500 hours of surveillance of
identified problem sites, such as City park parking lots and various commercial and retail parking
lots. The funding was also used for an in-depth auto theft identification and prevention class for
15 Roseville officers, and to insert a very informative brochure in the C it newsletter.
We believe the Crime Impact Teams doing the surveillance are making a dent in this problem.
The word is out that the police are paying special attention to this issue. We believe when 1998
is completed, the statistics will show we have reduced auto theft and related problems in
Roseville due to these special efforts.
We believe that continued focused efforts in this area will continue to have an impact. without
grant or other outside #`ending, however, we simply cannot afford to have officers doing 5, 6, or 7
hours of continuous surveillance, which is what is needed to attach the problem
PROPOSED ACTI
The Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program has approved the Police Department's request for
0,000 to continue our auto theft prevention efforts. The Council needs to approve this in order
for the City to receive this funding.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
The grant will Fay for overtime for officers doing surveillance work to prevent auto theft. There
I
s no local matching fund requirement.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Authorize acceptance of the $207000 Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program Grant.
COUNCIL ACTION RE ATE TED
Approve the resolution authorizing the City to accept the $20,000 grant award.
