City Council Minutes — 07/22/02
Page 5
Regular Council Meeting Reconvene
7:23 p.m.
I. Communications
A. Brief Communication about Radar Trailer Arriving Radar Trailer
and How the Police and Public Works Departments
Will Use It and How Citizens Can Sign-Up for It in
Their Neighborhood
Lt. Mathwig provided an update on the City's recent
purchase of the radar trailer through 2002 Budget funds.
Lt. Mathwig gave a brief review of the unit's capabilities
using Doppler radar, stating the unit was also capable of
providing additional data to the Police Department and
City, such as one direction average vehicle speed and the
number of vehicles using that roadway.
Residents were encouraged to contact the City regarding
placement for the monitoring unit. L t. Mathwig
explained that the Police Department had several
predetermined locations, but other areas of concern would
be placed on a waiting list.
Councilmember Klausing requested verification that 30
m.p.h. was the minimum speed allowed on roadways of a
certain design, and that if a road was not posted, a 30
m.p.h. rule was assumed.
Lt. Mathwig confirmed that this was true, in accordance
with State Statute, with variations only in school zones.
Councilmember Kough asked if tickets were issued at
those locations where the unit was used.
Lt. Mathwig responded that no ticketing was done off the
unit itself-, however, if an officer were in the area and
observed a vehicle over the posted limit, the officer might
stop the vehicle and issue a warning on the informational
stop.
