ui
WOE SESSION AGENDA ITEM NO.
March 4, 1998
TO: City Council • -
r~
FROM: Steve
SUBJECT: SPE co CIL WORK SESSION—CORNERSTONE DESIGN
CONCEPTS
Meeting Profile:
A special city council work session is needed to pull together the many interrelated issues
that are raised by the Cornerstone process. To hello the Council and community visualize
the potential for the Cornerstone redevelopment concept, an interactive CD Rom has been
financed by Met. Council which provides examples of the Cornerstone concepts. We
anticipate a very informal Council/staff discussion on a variety of issues. The session will
be in a somewhat different format than a work session in the sense that we'll be focused
around a television screen which will display the interactive video. No decisions will be
male; however, we do need Council direction 'in order for a number of projects to proceed.
Cornerstone conep :
Considerable interest has been generated 'in the discussion of the Cornerstone
Redevelopment Concept. The primary purpose of our meeting is to establish a more clear
"vision" for the redevelopment of some of our older commercial corners, which have been
the subject of the Cornerstone Project. Included in a `°vision s'will necessarily be the issues
of the following:
• Density
• Single or mixed use development
Design parameters (closeness to the curb, pedestrian scale, architectural styles,
etc.)
Level of economic redevelopment assistance any). [NOTE: Met. Council grant
application d ead I i ne of April 15, 1998.1
Possible Zoning Code changes and Comp. Plan charges
Transportation related issues (summarized by the Karl Keel memo dated March 4).
Any Council direction will be followed by numerous neighborhood meetings and public
hearings, and follow our prescribed public review process for any project or element
discussed.
It's difficult to estimate how long this meeting might last; however, the topics are important
enough to warrant a special City Council work session.
Respectfully submitted.
