X
'BREAKDOWN OF NEIGHBORHOODS LINKED TO 50-FOLD INCREASE
IN CHILD ABUSE"
There are 3 million cases-of child abuse in the U.S. annually, partially
attributed to breakdown in neighborhood life.
U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse recommended a comprehensive effort by
government, community leaders and residents to strengthen neighborhoods.
The rate of child maltreatment in a neighborhood is tied to the quality of life in
that neighborhood.
Neighborhoods considered dangerous and frightening by residents have higher
rates of maltreatment than neighborhoods that residents regard more positively,
even when those neighborhoods have equivalent income levels acid similar
ethnic composition.
Each City n
and County should work to develop a neighborhood child protectio
plan -for eery neighborhood in their jurisdiction including:
Youth networks, and positive adult role models, and positive roles create
for themselves in their community. Businesses should adopt high risk
neighborhoods and include parents, grand parents and youth.
Effective prevention occurs when there is:
1} Friendship among neighbors.
2.) Watchfiilness of each other's families.
3} Sense of belonging.
4) Ownership.
5) Collective responsibility.
6) Poverty intervention.
7} isolation reduction.
Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press 10/28/93
