Date* October 6 1993
TO: Mayor Vern Johnson
Council Members
Pat Johnson
Joanne Cushman
Steve Sarkoz
Dean Maschka
John Goedeke
Public Works
Steve Gatlin
Reference: Building a bicycle/ walk pathway along Counter Road C
Dear Mayor t Council Members , Mr o Gatlin
I want to reiterate my opposition to using federal money to build
a bicycle path at the present time, in view of the poor performance
of the US economy and the size of the national debt + I feel that
we should pay ourselves as we go,
Carol lent to, Colin Adams , and I met with architect Mr, Gary Ehret
and Senor engineer Bill Rasmussen from RRW Inc, on Wednesday
October 6P to assess the impact on our properties resulting from
the proposed bicycle path on the south side of County road C. We
were told that, the city council is considering several
a l t ernat ive.s
The first alternative which I had urged you to consider at the
meeting of September 27s 1993 and that I hope you will adopts is
the building of con.crete sidewalks adjacent to the curbs on both
sides of the road. such sidewalks could be used by both bicycles
and pedestrians and Mould serge better a much greater number of
pedestrians . Having rode the bus for fifteen year s o I know
that at pear traffic hours t it is often nearly impossible to cross
the road and that it is extremely dangerous. It is equally
dangerous to walk along-side the road in the gutter while cars zoom
by at 40 miles an hour t less .than .a foot away from you.
The second alternative would be to put the bicycle path on the
north sides This seems to be a logical and cost effective
alternative for the following reasons: First , it would line up with
the bicycle path on the North side of C in Little Canada and the
path user would not have to cross from the South to the 'North side
at the busy intersection of Rice. Secondr it would provide a safe
way for the residences North of County road C to access the bike
path/ park system, the residences on the South side have secondary
roads to access the park system* Third, it would less costly
because it would not be necessary to make special provisions for
h i'l i s and drop-of f
