the Byzantine style basilica in the town center, but what z remember best is
the friendliness and hospitality of the people,
The last time I was there I had the opportunity to visit some of the local
residents and to share an evening meal with them* The evening of talking,
music, and more food than anyone could ever eat was typical of the hospitality
that I have always received in the country.
I think that establishing a sister-city relationship with Cartago would be are
excellent thing, for Roseville to do. We in the sister City Committee have
already been in contact with Spanish teachers in the Roseville schools and they
are excited about the possibility of establishing pen-pals and maybe even an
exchange program.
I will be sending a fax to Cartago stating that we have received a copy of the
letter they sent Lupita Barahona at the Costa Rican Consulate and that we will
bring the matter before the Roseville City council. I think that it is in
everyone' s best interest to pursue this matter in a timely manner and to send
them an `official city response after we have had time to answer all the
questions which I am sure you will have. (Winter is coming and I are thinking
that if everything goes well, we could arrange a visit to Cartago at the end of
January and first part of February. )
Tony Anderson{ Lupita Barahona, and Sharon Johnson (a local Costa Rica expert
very familiar with the country) have all offered to give background 'Information
on Cartago and Costa Rica in general. Each of them will be at the Costa Rican
Independence Day Celebration, and this would be a good time to ask questions
and get more information about Cartago and Costa Rica* Also in attendance will
be representatives from other Minnesota cities that have established sister-
city relationships with other Costa Rican cities.
I have arranged for invitations to be given to the Mayor, Council Members, City
Manager, and other people of who this may be of interest. More invitations ar6
available if they are needed.
If you like champaign{ shrimp, delicious food, good music, and interesting
conversation, I encourage you to attend. You need not attend the concert -to
attend the Independence Day celebration. Please call Lupita Barahona at the
Costa Rican Consulate (647-3618) as soon as possible if you plan on attending
the celebration. Name tags will be made up for you (and your spouse if
attending) , and will be available at a table on the entry level of the Ordway.
If you wish to attend the concert, you will have to arrange this yourself
because of the late date.
If you have any questions{ please call me.
Sincerely,
hem 1M/MM640114
Thomas N.
