C. <br />Department Approval Manager Approval Agenda Section <br />Consent. <br />Item Description: <br />Planning Commission and Hurnan Rights Commission Appo <br />intments <br />Background: <br />Human Rights Commissioner Martha Hardesty resigned because other time commitments. The <br />Human Rights Commission provides a method of citizen input concerning human rights issues, <br />promotes a positive human rights climate in the community through public education and <br />addresses human rights complaints. Commissioners are appointed to three year terms and are <br />eligible to serve up to three consecutive terms. <br />This is the second vacancy on the Commission. The City advertised a vacancy in early summer <br />but no residents applied. One Commission term expires March 2004 and the other expires <br />March 2006 <br />In addition, Planning Commission Chair Troy Duncan resigned because of other time <br />commitments. The Planning Commission provides a forum for input into the City's specific <br />planning applications and development plans and policies. The Commission identifies <br />significant issues and makes recommendations to the City Council. The Commission term <br />expires March 2007. Comrriissioners are appointed to four year terms and are eligible to sere <br />up to two consecutive terms. <br />Council Action Requested: <br />Direct staff to advertise for applications to serve on the Human Rights Commission and <br />Planning Commission with applications due to the City by November 7. Staff would bring <br />forward names for the November 17 Council meeting. <br />
