P'Clge I of t
Curti, Carolyn
Subject.- Attempted Elimination of the Primary System
Importance: High
Carolyn, we are writing this e-mail to you because we will not be able to attend the public
meeting regarding the issue of attempting to eliminate the primary system in Roseville. The
only way to characterize this is shameful politics at there worst. Coincidentally, or
y Mayor s
up for re- election if he chooses to run this fall, assuming he is not convicted of the crimes with
which he is charged.
I
We all saw the number of candidates who were interested in running for City Council in the fall
of 2001. The primary system worked perfectly by eliminating all but 6 candidates for 3 open
City council positions. Obviously, what the Mayor would prefer is to have a large number of
candidates
a es run far the position of [Mayor so he does not have to obtain a clear at least a
51 %) majority. Unfortunately, politics in Roseville for the last 3 112 years have attained a
reputation for mean spirited bullying and retaliator- conduct on the art of the
Y Mayor. Just ask
anyone who has volunteered any time up at City Hall! We have become the laughing stock of
the Twin cities. By attempting to completely corrupt the political system b eliminating he
y
primary system, Roseville will attain the unique status of being the bottom of the barrel in terms
of the political process and the quality of candidates elected. Not to mention the fact that a
small well organized interest group could have a devastating effect on the election of the
Mayor if the primary process is eliminated. The only true way to guarantee that the democratic
process will correct itself is to continue to utilize the primary process for all elections in
Roseville. It has worked successfully not only in Roseville, but on the state and federal level
as Drell. We are at a complete loss as to understand hove anyone could support the elimination
of the primary process and keep a straight face. The last 3 112 gears have been bad enough.
A mistake was made in the fall of 1999 regarding the election of the current Mayor. Lets
let democracy correct the prior mistakes and allow the general electorate the ability to make
their position know by holding a primary and reducing the number of candidates to 2 for the
Mayor's position and 2 for the other City council position that will also be u p for election this
fall,
Let us not forget that the primary process serves a vital function and this p rocess should not be
eliminated because the Mayor is afraid to face a primary.
