B. <br />Asian Pacific American Month <br />Asian Pacific American Heritage Month <br />May 2003 <br />Whereas: In 1978, President Jir=y Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week; and <br />Whereas: In 1992 the holiday was expanded to the entire month of May; and <br />Whereas: The month of May Was selected to commemorate the first Japanese immi grants <br />to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, <br />1 869 (Golden Spire Day); and <br />Whereas. Asian Pacific Americans have a long history of contributions to the arts, <br />sciences and humanities; and <br />Whereas: Asian pacific Americans bring to our society a rich cultural heritage <br />representing many languages, ethnicities and religious traditions; and <br />Whereas: - Approximately five percent of Roseville residents are of Asian pacific <br />American descent-, and <br />Whereas: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure <br />that all Americans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the <br />accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans, Roseville celebrates the <br />importance of inclusion in building a brighter future for all our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare May 2003 to be Asian <br />Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U. .A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of <br />Roseville to be affixed this 12th day of May 00 . <br />Mayor John Kysylyczyn <br />
