Roseville's senior citize.r1 <br />discounts on water and seiveri <br />bills will continue. <br />. After much wrangling and <br />several failed amendments, the <br />City Council hi a 3 -0 vote Mon - <br />day night decided to mainLain <br />the existing discount program, <br />:8ind to extend it to those under <br />age 65 who meet federal pover- <br />y guidelines. Two members of <br />the five- member counell <br />abstained. <br />I call it a reward and a <br />'thank you to people over 65,1, <br />said Cowncil Member Torn <br />Kough. <br />*Mayor John Kysylyczyn and <br />Council Member Greg <br />Schroeder abstained. ICysyly- <br />czyn proposed vaxlous amend - <br />ments that would limit the dis- <br />count to those with household <br />incomes of tinder $50,000 or <br />$100,000, but neither passed. <br />"If Donald Trump lived in <br />seviNe., he'd be eligible," said <br />K sylyczyn} who said this type <br />of social services program gees <br />beyond the council's role and <br />accused his colleagues of politi- <br />cal grandstanding in an elec- <br />tion year. "Do we want to he on <br />record s aytng that Donald <br />rh hump would qualify for the <br />senior utility discotmt ?" <br />Several residents at a publzc <br />hearing spare in favor of keep - <br />ing the discounts for the city's <br />older population, particularly <br />during tough economic times. <br />�`UBURBAN BRIEFING <br />'Al think they're a wonderful <br />group of people," resident Arny <br />Herrera told the council. "We <br />need to support them. They've <br />paid their dues. They have <br />made Roseville what It 1s." <br />About 2,500 Roseville house - <br />holds now receive Lhe discount, <br />which is about $33 a year. The <br />remaining water and sewer <br />customers, including residen- <br />tial and cornmercial customers, <br />pay the difference. <br />Roseville city officials said it <br />is unknown how many addi- <br />tional people would qualify for <br />the discounts., but it will only <br />be a few.
