Collection <br />Vehicle Maintenance <br />Effective vehicle maintenance can also reduce noise. Assuring Impacts <br />that vehicles are well built, tight - fitting and well maintained will <br />help reduce vehicle noise. <br />Options / Recommendations <br />• Establish noise standards that are to be met by all <br />haulers as a condition of their license and require <br />haulers to verify and report on compliance with those <br />standards. (see Appendix A for sample language); <br />• Require operate -at -idle technology on all new vehicles; <br />require existing vehicles to be retrofitted; <br />• Require natural gas vehicles if the necessary infrastructure <br />can be developed; <br />• Require "Smart" back -up alarms; <br />• Remove glass from the curbside recycling program; <br />• Require various steps to be taken to reduce the noise <br />generated by the collection of commercial containers near <br />residential areas (e.g., treating containers, lid supports and <br />truck forks with sound deadening materials; using plastic <br />lids or dumpsters); <br />• Limit the time commercial collection activities can occur <br />within a specified distance of residential areas (see <br />Appendix A for sample contract language); <br />• Require vehicles to be well maintained; and <br />✓ Implement a Districted Collection System or City -Wide <br />Contract for Services to reduce the number of trash <br />trucks on a typical residential street and vehicle miles <br />traveled: <br />Require operate -at -idle technology on <br />residential vehicles as a condition of the award <br />of the districts. <br />Safety <br />Background / Overview <br />Solid waste operations can pose safety risks to employees and <br />the general public.
