I
-it at diversity, In their schools, ithey had ie' osilive
may have a d fferei . i 'ea abo wer.p:
oppoilunities to learn about diversity, welcoming other cultures and different sexual orientations.
Today, kids at school may have two mothers, gay and lesbian couples as neighbors and, even
r - i j.ous youth leaders of different sexual orientation. More people of d"fferent races, sexuaA
elig* I
orientation, religion,
, etc. are, prqjected in. the media and all I of'these different groups are.
interacting with eac . er. Thus, there is more exposure to all of the viewers and readers and
z:7
hopefully over time more comfoil with each other.
The government has established many laws, making discrimination illegal. In order to be
illegal though, people can only be disc: n'min ate d by race, color, creed, religion, national origin,
sex,, marital status, faiullial status', disability, Public assistance, age and sexual orientation or
I
loca,l Human Rights ConunisSion activity. Disc6mination in th,ose categories happen everyday
against anybody. 'The only problem is, soinedne has to be abile to prove that they werLA"
discriminated against, which is not always easy' you have no direct evidence and no
punishment. Continually since 1948 people all over the world in the United Nations group have
tried to, testa ills. a law making the whole act of discrimination, illegal.
if the govemment has laws to rotect us, flie media portrays all different groups relatively
P V
equally, and scholoils are be " 'ng to be more diverse why do we still ex-perience d"scrirn*nation
ginm I I I
a
in our it lives? Is, it genetic? Are people seared of differences? Or maybe there is no simple
i mw pip
since people discovered that everyone was not the same. Will it end? There are so many ways
we hurt co de by discriminating, but there are so many more ways to prevent discrimination and
open up our nunds about dIfferences. If we cm-i accept that people are different and we can
understand, their differences and cultures, later, when people welcome everyone as they are,
discn"'mination can be looked, at as something people dild negatively, in the past,, that wasn't
mean -it to, be part our future for tomorrow.
