thecharaicters, Chelsea, is Caucasian and a red-head, so she acts dumb, is a
vegetarian, and is a very liberal person. Raven,, is African - American, and is labeled
with a type of music she likes, and the way she talks. Eddie is also African- American
and is automatically labeled with liking rap music, i wanting to be a rap artist, and
wearing pants that are ten times too big. And finally, another character, William, is a
scrawny Caucasian kid, and lead to believe that', he is a, nerd, cluiet and antisocial.
Now people who Ilool,,,, like these characters don't always act like that, some do, but
lots ofloeopile don't. Kids watch this show daily, so when they see flow these
characters arty, they are beginning to believe that everyone who looks like that, acts
like that. They then take those ideas out into the public with their friends, and that's
how discrimination happens.
Another reason I think discrimination exists,, is how parents raise their kids.
People don't inherit racism or any other type of prejudice. It is taught, and learned.
Parents have beliefs of their own, and sometimies, those beliefs are put onto their
kids. 'Somethings may have happened in a parent's lifetime that made them dislike a
certain type of'persion. They then might tell their kids to never associate with people
whio, look like that. That leads to a long line of prejudice in that family. Parents or
other family members may act a certain way or talk about a certain type of person,
and kids, pick up on things very easily, so they will copy that way of thinking. People
just don't think about what they say around young children. Some parents also
tolerate 'Jokes ly about sexual orientations like 11i Oh that's gc7y or other Jokes" about
race, gender etcetera,. In most he those types of phrases are disrespectful,
but f'or kids who say things like that all the time, that becomes their way of
thinking.
My last reason of why discrimination still exists is that, unfortunately, it's
human nature. We humans are afraid of what we don't know; and we make up
things so that we can understand. Many of us think that people who are different
then we are, i are infer, ior to us. If the men and women who enslaved African-
Americans would've known that we are no different on the inside, maybe that whole
slavery time period wouldn't have occurred. Scientifically we are all the same. We
have a face, a body, and a brain. But we all have different traits to set us apart, and
some people aren't comfortable with that. They only like people who are like them.
And yes, if we were all the same, we might not have all these prejudices. But, we
would also lose the uniqueness of everyone who calls Minnesota, or the United
States,, their home.
While it may be too late to turn back time, it's, not too late to stop
discrimination in it's path. With simple things, likie having no tolerance for hurtful
"jokes 77 1 pointing out racism and bias in the media, and standing up for what is
right, we can stop the pirejudice in this world.
