Black Aistory ITionth <br />February 2008 <br />Whereas: The City of Roseville is committed to recognizing and honoring the <br />contributions of all members of our community, and <br />Whereas: Negro History Week was establi shed in 1926 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson <br />as a way to neutralize the dell'berate distortion of Black History, and <br />Whereas: This movement grew over the years to Black History Month to give an <br />objective and scholarly balance in American and World History- and <br />Whereas: In 2008, Black History Month celebrates Dr. Woodson and his contributions to <br />the Origins o f Multicultural i sm and to his quest to bring the public � s attention to the impo rtant <br />contributions that African Amen cans have made to our society; and <br />Whereas-. The month of February was selected as Black History Month because it marks <br />the birth of Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston, Hughes and Abraham Lincoln, <br />leaders whose actions greatly impacted the lives of the American black population- and <br />Whereas: Air ca n American's contributions to history, music, arts, written words and <br />discoveries are often overlooked- and <br />Whereas: Roseville declares prejudi'ce and ignorance have no place in our community; <br />and <br />Whereas: The Roseville Human Rights Commission invites all members of the Roseville <br />community to renew their commitment to ensuring racial equality, understanding anct justice. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare February 2008 to be <br />Black History Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seat of the City of <br />Roseville to be affixed this 11t% day of February 2008. <br />Pw <br />Mayor Craig D.
