Department Approval <br />l <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Date.- 12/01/08 <br />Item No..- 7.a <br />City Manager Approval <br />Item Description.- Approve Resolution to Submit a Grant Application for the Active Living Ramsey <br />County 1,000 Bench Program <br />=Ikm <br />2 The American lifestyle has become one that is sedentary in nature. Over the past ten years there has been <br />3 an unfortunate trend toward physical inactivity that has contributed to obesity, increased diagnosis of <br />4 chronic disease and amplified early deaths associated with sedentary lifestyles. <br />6 To help people to get moving and stay moving, Ramsey County, through Active Living Ramsey County <br />"7 (ALRC)I,, has established a 1,000 bench grant program whereby Ramsey County will cost share the <br />,i <br />installation of benches up to $,600 per bench for eligible projects. The 2008 Park Improvement Program <br />9 (PIP), funding anticipated and included participating in this program. The application is attached and is for <br />I ('-) the installation of 10 benches in and around Langton Lake Park. As a part of submitting the grant <br />"I'll application, the attached resolution of support is necessary. <br />12 <br />13 Active Living Ramsey County is a partnership dedicated to creating and promoting environments that make <br />14 it safe and convenient for people to integrate physical activity into their daily lives. The goal of the 1,000 <br />I Benches Program is to encourage people to walk in their neighborhood and promote environmentally <br />16 sustainable communities. <br />I ��7 <br />18 Even though benches are a place to rest, they also support and encourage physical activity and movement; <br />19 especially for the elderly, disabled and people with young children, all of whom may need to stop and rest <br />2o during a walk. The Langton Lake Pathway to Health encourages walking for leisure and fitness as well as <br />2 1 providing a form of transportation and a means to connect people to destinations. The notion of having a <br />22 place to sit and rest periodically while heading to ones destination is also accomplished with this effort. <br />23 POLICY OBJECTIVE <br />24 The City strives to facilitate the needs of the community to support initiatives that provide our community <br />25 with resources and opportunities to support a healthier lifestyle. Residents rely on the City of Roseville to <br />26 show leadership and commitment to mobilize residents and neighbors to pursue healthier lifestyles and <br />27 support more active communities through parks and recreation. Parks and Recreation is eager to create a <br />28 Pathway to Health around Langton Lake that will; <br />29 OProvide a much needed link between neighborhoods, local businesses, adult health care facilities <br />30 and future residential developments. <br />Page I of 2 <br />
