01 UA A = M
J, was 5 on
To Mayor and Council
1 Bill Malinen,, City Manager
From Duane Schwartz,, Public Works Director
Date: July 2, 2008
Re: Response to Citizen and Council Budget Requests or Suggestions
y.
187 Enclosed is a brief response to the citizen and/or Council budget requests or suggestions submitted in June
1 Suggestion: 'Additional funding for sidewalks, pathways, and tree replacements in parks and on
190 city boulevards (Councilmember IhIan)'
191
192 Response.* The City approved budget has not contained funding for new construction of trails and
193 sidewalks for several years. Trails and sidewalks that have been constructed in the past five years have been
194 funded with MSS road funds and grants. The current update to the Pathway Master Plan indicates
195 significant needs for filling existing gaps in the system. Staff continues to seek outside funding
196 opportunities for pathways. These are typically competitive grants and sought after by many agencies. Staff
197 has requested funding in the 2010 CIP, $,150,000 for new pathway and sidewalk construction.
198
199 The City currently does not have a tree replacement program. Several hundred trees have been planted in
2 ('-) ('-) the County C corridor as part of a streetscape project which was funded by a federal grant and roadway
2 ('3;1 funds. Trees are sometimes replaced as part of other roadway projects but an ongoing funding source has
202 not been identified for tree replacement citywide.
