WSB & Associates, In
Proposal BL-08-0238
#ctober 9., 2008
Page 2
Penetration Test Borings
As discussed, we propose to drill a total of twenty-eight standard penetration test borings for the project
along the proposed road (and utility) alignments. The proposed boring depths are listed below.
Number of Borings
Proposed Depth (feet)
18
15
2
20
2
25
6-
30
Penetration tests will be performed at 2 1/2-foot vertical intervals to a depth of 15 feet below grade and
then at 5-foot intervals to the boring termination depth.
If groundwater is encountered in the boreholes, the depth where it is observed will be recorded on the
bloring logs. If borings are located within areas that ar I e currently paved; the approximate pavement and
aggregate base (if pre5ent), thicknesses will be measured.
Borehiolle Abandonment
Due to the presence of relitively shallow groundwater and the potential for encountering
environmentally impacted soils, we are planning to backfill all of the boreholes with bent onite' grout.
Sea mple Review and Laboratory Testing
Samples will be returned to our laboratory where they will be visually classified and logged by a
geotelchnical engineer. Laboratory testing will then be Iperformed to assist in evaluating the strength and
CoMpressibility of the soils. For our evaluation, we have included forty-two 'moisture content, three
Atterberg limits,, six sieve analysis and eight organic content tests in our budget. However, actual
laboratory tests performed will be dependent on the soils encountered and may vary from those
p raw plosied,
Reporting and Engineering Analysis
Data obtained from the borings and laboratory tests will be used to evaluate the subsurface profile and
groundwater conditions, perform engineering analysies related to pavement and utility design and
performance, and prepare a report including:
A CAD sketch showing the project components and limits, as well as exploration locations.
Logs of the borings describing the materials encountered and presenting the results of our
groundwater measurements and laboratory tests.
M A summary of the subsurface profile and groundwater conditions.
Discussions regarding the reuse of on-site matie'rials during construction, and of the impact
of groundwater on construction.
IRecommenidations for preparing pavement and utility subgrades, excavation depths for soil
,corrections if applicable), and the selection, placement and compaction of excavation
bilackfill and other structural fill.
IN Geotlechniical recornmend'ations for the design of pavements and underground utilities.
La I Ilk
