Rlskspvlffi
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Department Approval
e'A zt ASY4
Item Description: Authorize a Joint Fiber Optic Installation Project
Date: 05/19/08
Item No.: 12.e
City Manager Approval
BACKGROUND
Since 2002, the City has capitalized on a number of opportunities to install fiber optic communication lines
to connect City facilities. Most recently in 2000, the City partnered with Access Corporation, a private
telecommunications service provider, to install fiber along County Road B2 between Snelling Avenue and
Rice Street that would serve the City of Roseville, the Roseville School District, and Independent School
District #910 (Northeast Metro) .
Over the past two years, City Staff has been meeting with officials from the Roseville School District to
consider a joint project to install fiber that would connect additional City and School District facilities.
Facilities that have tentatively been identified for this fiber segment include (also see attached map) :
❖ Fire Station #3
❖ Nature Center
•'• Shryer Avenue water Booster Station
•'• Central Park Elementary
•'• Parkview School
The City facilities listed above would connect back to City Hall via Comcast- provided fiber. The cost of
this fiber segment would be approximately $140,000, of which, $75,000 would be paid for by the City with
the remainder paid by the School District. If the project is approved, it is anticipated that cost - sharing and
usage agreements would be entered into by the City and the School District. The School District Board has
already given conceptual approval of the project and is awaiting Council action.
The installation of a municipal -owned fiber network and the partnership opportunity with the School
District is consistent with the goals and strategies identified in the Imagine Roseville 2025 process. It will
also expand and complement the existing private fiber network already in place on the City Hall campus
and along County Road B2.
