On a related note, City Staff is also working in cooperation with a number of regional governments to
prepare comprehensive Fiber and Technology Master Plans that will identify not only the City of
Roseville's long -term needs, but the needs of many interdependent agencies that serve the northeast metro
area. Because of the complexity of working with varying agencies it is anticipated that these Plans will be
finalized no sooner than December 2009. A working draft of the Plans is attached.
Although these Plans are far from complete, it is recognized that the proposed fiber segment detailed above
would serve an identifiable need for both the City and the Roseville School District, and will undoubtedly
serve as a major backbone to a larger fiber network in the future.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
Multi jurisdictional agreements and projects are consistent with the goals and strategies identified in the
Imagine Roseville 2025 process. The Joint construction of a fiber optic network will serve a larger number
of constituents and achieve greater economies of scale than if the City would to construct one separately.
FINANCIAL IMPACTS
The estimated cost for the initial fiber segment detailed above for the City of Roseville would be $75,000.
Monies for the project were included in the City's 2008 Equipment Fund Budget.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Council authorize Staff to solicit bids for the 2008 Joint Fiber Outlay project with the
Roseville School District.
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION
Motion to authorize Staff to solicit bids for the 2008 Joint Fiber Outlay project with the Roseville School
District as outlined in this Staff Report.
Prepared by: Chris Miller, Finance Director
Terre Heiser, Information Technology Manager
Attachments: A: Project Summary and Fiber Map
B: Working Draft for the development of a City Fiber optic Network and Technology Master Plans
Page 2 of 9
