CASE NUMBER: 1366-82
APPLICANT: Jim f roiss
ti
5 May 1982
Page 2
applying for permission to construct a 330 f000t "self supporti nglt (without
guy wires) radio tower at the far northwest corner of a parcel 291 feet
in de th r subdivided about three
years ago on the north end of properties
owned and occupied by Mid - America Trucking Liles. Attached is a sketch
submitted by the applicants' architects, Pope Associates, indicating the
location of the tower relevent to contiguous properties and a site plan
of the parcel on which the tower is to be placed} Also attached is a
perspective prepared by the architects indicating a view of the tourer as
it would appear from the northwest ( looking southeast),
4, Because the tower represents a separate principal use on a single parcel
of land, approval of a Planned Unit Development is required. The
applicants propose to lease an area of Land measuring 60 feet by 60 feet
to be occupied by the tower and a eight foot by ten foot building to
house co=nuni" ca tions equipment. Inasmuch as this 60 foot square area of
land is not to be subdivided to title transferred, a. subdivision is not
proposed. you will note from the site plan that the 60 foot by 60 foot
area is proposed to be fenced with a cyclone fence, and surrounded with a
'I tall hedge". A gateway is provided with access 'rights in the lease for
intermittent service purposes; The applicants indicate the purpose of the
tower is to support antennae on the top of the structure but is not to
include "dish shaped" antennae. The applicants indicate that the tower will
be owned by them and leased to the Motorola Company to provide two-way
radio communications to serve businesses in the northern suburbs. Though
no structural plans have been submitted to date, the applicant indicates
the tower will be constructed to State of Minnesota safety requirements,
and presumably in accordance with the Uniform Building Code.
The tower will have three supporting legs which gradually taper to the top,,
with the legs being placed 40 feet apart in a triangular configuration.
5* For purposes of comparing and visualizing the height, the following data
may be helpful.
a. The Win Towers in Shoreview are 1,375 feet in height, but
of course, are quite different from the tower proposed inasmuch
as these towers are supported by guy wires.
b. The Channel 9 tower in Shoreview is 1,466 feet " in height, it
too is supported by guy wires.
C, The KUOIM University Tower is 300 feet high and is located at
the University of Minnesota Golf Course, west of Cleveland and
south of Roselawn Avenue. This tower is also supported by
guy wires.
d. The KSTP Tower located on the boundary between Minneapolis
and Saint Paul, just north of University Avenue is 550 feet
