<br />City Council Study Session Minutes- 01/12/04 <br />Page 8 <br /> <br />application and enforcement in other cities. <br /> <br />Mr. Loftus noted that staff had completed comparisons, and the <br />proposed fees were below average, with some cities charging for <br />re- inspections. <br /> <br />Councilmember Schroeder further opined the need for recouping <br />the true cost of inspections. <br /> <br />Mayor Klausing requested supporting data from staff's research. <br /> <br />Mr. Loftus advised that he did not have the research information <br />compiled in a list, and had received much of it through state and <br />regional fire meetings with other entities. <br /> <br />Councilmember Maschka questioned whether that comparison <br />information would be beneficial on other fee schedule revisions <br />as well. <br /> <br />Councilmember Schroeder noted that the availability of that <br />information would be beneficial for justification to the public. <br /> <br />Mayor Klausing noted that he was of the impression that the <br />Council had already provided direction to staff to bring back <br />comparison information. <br /> <br />Councilmember Schroeder noted that he was not necessarily <br />looking for comparison information from cities of similar size, <br />but also from neighboring communities in the immediate area. <br /> <br />Mayor Klausing noted that, given current budget constraints, it <br />was prudent for government to look more closely at services <br />provided, and define those that were not feasible to apportion <br />specificall y and those that should be specifically apportioned to <br />those using the services. <br /> <br />Further discussion included the costs defined by the Finance <br />Department and incorporated into the recommended fees by the <br />Fire Department; expansion of the comparison area to <br />accommodate mall operations; the need for staff and Council to <br />review regulatory fees by specific area, rather than overall at one <br />
