Public Safety in the 21 st Century, continued <br />Those in attendance for this round table discussion <br />included Fire Chief Richard Gasaway; Deputy Fire Chief <br />Greg Peterson; Assistant Fire Chief Tim O'Neill; Deputy <br />Fire Chief Bill Chandler; Police Chief Carol Sletner; <br />Community Development Director Dennis Welsch; and <br />Allina Transportation Executive Director Brian LaCroix <br /> <br />Requested action: To approve, in concept, the three (3) <br />public safety goals as presented: <br />1) Improve the Quality of Fire and Emergency Medical <br />Services (EMS) for Residents and Visitors of <br />Roseville; <br />2) Improve the Way the Fire Department Trains and <br />Uses Firefighters' Time, and Use City Funds More <br />Effectively to Provide City- Wide Medical and <br />Safety Training to Employees; and <br />3) Be Prepared to Handle Natural and Man-made <br />Disasters and Other Large-Scale Emergencies; <br />and authorize the City Manager to prepare and bring back <br />to the City Council an action plan to implement these <br />goals. <br /> <br />Discussion items included the following issues, with <br />dialogue between Councilmembers and staff responding as <br />appropriate: on-duty shift training process; training <br />manager being a new position; reduction in actual fire <br />calls over the last few years and the changes experienced <br />in the firefighting industry; OSHA and state certification <br />requirements and mandates; community expectations; <br />department expertise; continuing education requirements; <br />additional equipment and expenditures needed under the <br />EMT concept; type of vehicle used for first responders; <br />station location for daytime responders; number of stations <br />anticipated for operation; future facility needs; staffing <br />scenarios with full-time and part-time duty personnel and <br />associated costs. <br /> <br />Allina Transportation Executive Director Brian LaCroix <br /> <br />Public Safety in the <br />21 st Century, <br />continued <br />
