City Council Regular Meeting - 02/27/06 Minutes - Page 34 Mr. Christianson reviewed his various options and their specific advantages and disadvantages. Mr. Christianson's preferred option, identified as "possible access with different curves," was his suggestion to the Council, including designing for roads with speeds less than 30 miles per hour for more traffic calming through the neighborhood. Chris Hughes, 1729 Rose Place Mr. Hughes noted that, in meetings held to-date, it appeared that safety was MnDOT's main concern; and suggested that the City Council focus on that in future discussions, noting that the current yet temporary solution appeared to be reducing accidents and accomplishing their goals. Mr. Hughes opined that, citing safety concerns for emergency vehicles accessing the assisted living facility, leant no logic to MnDOT's safety issues. Mr. Hughes urged the Council to return to MnDOT with tonight's comments and additional information, to prove that the current configuration is not unsafe. Councilmember Maschka opined that at the first fatal accident, MnDOT would immediately close the access. Further discussion included individual interpretations of MnDOT's letter and their requested information; funding for this issue; and the Task Force. Lee Goldman, 1756 Oakcrest Avenue Mr. Goldman opined that past meetings provided numerous options, and residents in the neighborhood were convinced the intersection would be kept open, so they were unwilling to compromise on a viable solution. Mr. Goldman further opined that, with MnDOT's firm commitment to close the access, they were more open to finding a solution. Mr. Goldman noted the repercussions of safety issues gravitating to Fairview Avenue from Snelling Avenue; and encouraged the City Council to actively seek out funds for a viable solution and consider all options.
