Regular City Council Minutes - 06/16/03
Minutes -Page 5
Project Manager Duane Schwartz reviewed the potential
upgrades for the City Council Chambers to bring it into
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) and to make it a more user-friendly room, and
included installation of a ramp for handicap access to the
Council.. dais. Staff and Ankeny Kell Architects
representative Pam Anderson, provided two (2)
alternatives for Council consideration; seeking Council
direction for the final design process.
Mr. Schwartz advised, in response to Mayor Kysylyczyn's
question regarding when a decision needed to be made,
that given the upcoming Council recess and the bid
package schedule, a decision on which design the Council
preferred would be needed at tonight's meeting.
Discussion included budget ($30,000) for Council
Chamber upgrades in addition to reserves in the Cable
Franchise Fee Fund specified for audio and technology
improvements;
Councilmember Maschka opined that the proposed
Alternate Plan's "horseshoe" design .appeared to be most
functional option with the presentation screen in the front
and presentation table in the middle.
Mayor Kysylyczyn concurred opining his preference for
the bringing the room into ADA compliance, including
room exits, and doing it correctly even at added expense.
Councilmember Maschka provided a historical perspective
on the original room being designed by Jerome Frank for
multi-use purposes.
Councilmember Kough opined his support of the Alternate
plan.
Councilmember Klausing sought clarification from Project
Manager Schwartz regarding the presentation table and
facilitation of monitors and Commission and other groups
using a round table format and the ability for expansion.
Council Chamber
Renovation Options
