April23,2012 <br />ItemNo.5.a <br />Asian Pacific American Heritage Month <br />May 2012 <br />Whereas <br />: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas <br />: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1990, President George Bush signed a <br />Resolution expanding the holiday to the entire month of May; and <br />Whereas <br />: From the early 1800s to today, Asian and Pacific peoples have made lasting <br />contributions to and have played a vital role in the development of the United States; and <br />Whereas <br />: Asian and Pacific Americans have provided leadership, diversity and harmony to <br />the arts, sciences and humanities and society; and <br />Whereas <br />: Roseville recognizes the rich cultural heritage representing many languages, <br />ethnicities and religious traditions that Asian Pacific Americans bring to our society; and <br />Whereas <br />: Roseville recognizes Asian Pacific American Heritage Month’s 2012 theme of <br />“Striving for Excellence in Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion;" and <br />Whereas <br />: More than seven percent of Roseville residents are of Asian Pacific American <br />descent; and <br />Whereas <br />: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure <br />that all Americans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the <br />accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans, Roseville celebrates the <br />inclusion of all people in building a better future for our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved <br /> that the City Council hereby declare May 2012 to be Asian <br />Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U.S.A. <br />In Witness Whereof <br />, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affixed this twenty-third day of April 2012. <br />________________________ <br />Mayor Daniel J.
