Twenty-three percent of the sample participated in their <br />neighborhood program: <br />YES..................... ..................23� <br />NO............ ............................27% <br />This level of participation is at the suburban norm. <br />Senior couples were most �ikely to participate in the <br />program; $12,500-$25,000 yearly income households were least <br />likely to do so. <br />Finally, potential participation was ascertained: <br />Wo�ld you participate in a neighbor- <br />hood crime watch proqram in your area <br />under the guidance of the Police <br />Department3 <br />Forty-one percent of the sample was interested in becoming a part <br />of a neighborhood pragram: <br />YES.......................................41% <br />NO.........................................6� <br />DON'T KNOW/REFUSED .........................3$ <br />There was a remarkably low level of non-interest. <br />Participation intentions were highest among: <br />* 5-9 unit apartment building residents <br />* Clerical-Sa1es households <br />* 18-34 year olds <br />* $37,500-$50,000 yearly income households <br />Intentions were significantly less among: <br />* Single seniors <br />* Over 10 unit apartment building residents <br />* Retirees <br />* Over 65 year olds <br />Smaller apartment buildings would appear to be an excellent <br />starting point for a neighborhood crime watch program. <br />In light of the concerns about vandalism, the high interest <br />in a crime watch program is not surprising. <br />94 <br />
