In general, then, both <br />programming and facilities are well-regarded in the community. <br />Sixty-seven percent of the sample reported households usage <br />of the paved pathways for non-motorized vehicles. They are used <br />primarily far recreational purposes. Winter maintenance efforts <br />were highly rated: eighty percent of thase expressing opinions <br />said the efforts were "excellent" ar "goad." Like other park <br />system components, paved pathways are used extensively and ranked <br />highly by Ru���iil1� i��id��its. <br />Perceptions of safety were garnered in two ways. Ninety- <br />five percent of the sample felt safe in their residences at <br />night. But, thirty-one percent indicated they would not feel <br />safe at night walking aZone in their neighborhoods. This was <br />tied directly to people wha felt th� streets in their <br />neighborhoods were inadequately lit with street lights. The <br />number af people expressing concern about neighborhood safety is <br />somewhat higher than the suburban norm. <br />Only six percent of the residents were incorrect abaut the <br />use of the 911 telephane number. But, twenty percent did nat <br />realize the number could be used to report in-progress suspicious <br />occurrences. More information about the emergency number may be <br />needed. One aspect of the 911 service did receive outstanding <br />ratings: ninety-one percent af those expressing opinions rated <br />the ambulance service as "excellent" or "good." <br />When asked to indicate the severity in Roseville of a list <br />of sociaZ problems, thirty-six percent of the citizenry viewed <br />vandalism as a major problem and thirty-three percent saw alcahol <br />and chemical abuse similarly. Reckless driving and teen <br />pregnancy were viewed as major problems by approximately twenty- <br />five percent. Spouse and/or child abuse and juvenile suicide <br />ranked next at about seventeen percent. Racial problems and bias <br />was viewed seriausly by thirteen percent. Gangs of juvenile <br />delinquents, crack houses, and Satanic cults ranked last at less <br />than six percent each. Forty percent also reported that speeding <br />automabiles and other traffic was a major problem in their <br />neighborhood. Preventian of property crimes and programs aimed <br />at drug problems should be prioritized as public safety <br />initiatives. <br />Seventy-two percent of the sample were aware that the <br />Roseville Fire Department is a paid, part-time organization. A <br />similar percentage would support spending additional funds to <br />provide a fire safety and prevention program; in fact, fifty-four <br />percent favor a tax increase, if needed to fund this type of <br />program. Ninety-six percent said they have smoke detectors in <br />their residences, and eighty-five percent tested them xegularly. <br />Current emergency medical services were deemed adequate by <br />ninety-two percent of those offering opinions.
