City Manager Malinen suggested ihat the <br />145 HRC address those issues from a broader perspective, and recognize certain legal issues that the <br />146 City Council considers from a more global viewpoint. City Manager Malinen advocated for a <br />147 broader approach for the community, to ac$ively engage in comrnunication individually and <br />14$ collectively to create more understanding. <br />149 <br />150 <br />151 <br />152 <br />153 <br />154 <br />Chair Delmore said that a joint meeting with the City Council would be advantageous. <br />City Manager Maiinen advised that all advisory commissions were scheduled for their annual <br />meeting with the City Council later this spring, depending on agenda time availahility. <br />155 City Manager Malinen encouraged the HRC ta pursue community involvement in their diversity <br />156 training, through pragrams discussed earlier and offered staffl s support to hclp the HRC gei <br />157 notice out to the community for such meetings. <br />158 <br />1S9 <br />`0 <br />.�1 <br />1G2 <br />1b3 <br />lb4 <br />1b5 <br />lb6 <br />167 <br />168 <br />lb9 <br />Commissioner McKenzie volunteered to provide additional information on the Grand Rapids <br />training, and Commissioner Crump suggested that at the next HRC meeting, a date be set and <br />planning begun in earnest. <br />Further discussion included broad-spectrum mailings; how to encourage attendance, developing <br />partnerships with thc school district, MN Departmen# of Human Rights, possible grant funds and <br />other planning considerations. <br />City Manager Malinen offered to seek out additional information on grant funding available <br />through the State Leagae of Human Righis. <br />170 Public Commeiq.t <br />171 Ms. Muoi Duhl shared some perspectives of diversity changes that she'd experienced in her <br />172 native Vietnam and impacts depending on occupation and lifestyle. <br />173 <br />174 <br />175 <br />176 <br />177 <br />178 <br />179 <br />Commissioners agreed that the next agenda include discussion on planning for community <br />fonun/diversity training. <br />Commissioner Venters asked that City Manager Malinen direct the City Attorney to respond to <br />his e-mail in a timely manner. <br />180 Commissioner Venters noted that in reviewing essays the MN Human Rights Act stated that <br />181 individuai classes wcre protecled, and asked ihat a letter to Mindy Greiling and lohn Marty be <br />'°2 drafted asking that immigx-ation status be a protected class in the Human Rights Act. <br />,3 Commissioner Venters volunteered to draft the letter for the next meeting. <br />
