Commissioner Oftelie agreed saying many useful materials were <br />provided. <br />City Manager Malinen agreed to provide additional information on ihe statute referenced by the <br />City Attorney and the policy on informal and formal advisory opinions. <br />14 Continue Discussion of Diversity/Race Forum <br />15 Discussion was helc� regarding the Grand Rapids diversity and race training; advantages in peer <br />16 training for the Police Department and different levels of law enforcement; P�ST Board credit <br />17 consideration; potential speakers to address diversity on the job; time required to set up a training <br />18 program (i.e., county-wide; mandatory Peace Officer attendance during the two-day training; <br />19 shift requirements; planning; duplication of the Grand Rapids process and plan; advertising); and <br />20 the need for a staff person to assist the HItC in setting up the iraxning. <br />21 <br />22 <br />23 <br />24 <br />25 <br />Commissioner Bosch expressed enthusiasm in pursuing this program after a year of discussion. <br />City Manager Malinen offered his assistance to #he HRC to formulate the training program. <br />26 Venters moved, Bosch seconded, that the HRC fiuthcr investigate providing a diversity training <br />27 program involving law enforcement ofiicers and recognizing the HRC's commitment to pursue <br />2$ this training in 2008; with further discussion to be held and additional information provided at <br />29 the January 2008 meeting to a11ow for more formal organization, division of tasks, how to <br />30 involve federal, county and city law enforcement officials; and logistics for implementation. <br />31 Motion canied 7/0/0. <br />32 <br />33 Sharing Local Human Rights Events; 2007 Human Rights Day Conference <br />34 Commissioners �ftelie and McKenzie provided an update on their attendance at the State <br />35 rneeting. They shared ntiunerous ideas and cncouraged review of the materials along with <br />36 developing plans and commitments to carry through on opportunities. <br />37 <br />38 <br />39 <br />46 <br />41 <br />42 <br />Commissioners agrecd they space at City Hall for reference inforrnation. <br />Commissioner Venters volunteered to ask the City's official newspaper to publish Dr. Martin <br />Luther King Jr.'s Nobel Peace Prize speech commemorating his January 21 irthday. <br />43 Discussion included the HRC's focus and monthly foci of Human Rights-related recognitions to <br />44 acknowledge and make citizens aware similar to those done by the City of Bloomington; and the <br />45 possibility for newspapers to allow the HRC to focus on such recognitions as a public service <br />46 and if there would be a charge. <br />
