Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meetiug M�inutes — December 12, 2006 <br />Page 6 of 6 <br />Continuation of Essay Discussion <br />Further discussiot� ensued on the essay process and presentation to the City Council at their <br />February 2007 meeting and the HRC's attendance at the meeting; consistency in individual <br />Commissioner essay review; as well as clarifying the I�RRC ra#ing and staff ranki.ng process, and the <br />deadline for providing individuai selections to staff for processing (before the Janua.ry HRC <br />meeting). <br />Other <br />Each Commissioner expressed concern regarding tl�e recent gang-related incident at the Roseville <br />Area High School (RAHS); how the ��RC could approach the situation and becomc involved in <br />resolving ongoing issues at area schools; frustration with the continuing lack of communication <br />when the HRC approaches school personai; the HRC's collective disgust with student behavior <br />from a Human Rights and/or Womcn's Rights standpoint; and how the HRC could bring light to <br />the situation, find a positive way to intervene and find a solution. <br />Discussion included the appareni nation-wide problem at public schools; student transitions and <br />involvement in a solution; need for a youth representative(s) on the HRC; apparent lack of interest <br />in working with the HRC from Johanna Edwards, Diversity Coordinator at R.AHS, and Ann <br />Postlewaite, Activities Director/Coordinator at RAHS; and possible invitation to the School <br />Superintendent to address the HRC. <br />Comrnissioners concurred that thcy wanted to see a copy of the mailing (e-mail?) sent to parents of <br />school children rcgarding the incident, in an effort to get the facts about the situatian and possiblc <br />solutions. <br />It was also Commission consensus to contact Roseville Area Schools Superintendent John Thein to <br />speak #o the HRC. <br />Further discussion included the prevalence of domestic violence and the H1ZC's purview of such <br />issues; the apparent "brokenness" of the school system; and the stigma for black students #o pursue <br />involvement in honors programs. <br />Coznmissioner Crump addressed his work in rnentoring of young African� American students, and <br />encouraging children that excelling was az� "education t.hing, not an ethnic thing;" and opined the <br />need for parents to have higher expectations of their children, regardless of student peer pressure. <br />Adjournment <br />Chair I�elmore moved and Commissioner Crump seconded adjou�ment of the rr�eeting at 8:21 <br />p.m. <br />
