Clpdate on Black Hxstary Month Event <br />Carolyzi Curti rcportcd that everything is set for the February 16 event at Parkview School. <br />Mark Taylor will do two rcenactments of Dr. Martin Luther King's I Have a�ream specch. <br />Boolrnlarks with age appropriatc reading materials will be distributed to alI thc students. <br />Forum on the Patriot Act <br />Conaxnissioner Vnuk reported on a forum she attended that discussed the Patriot Act. She said <br />even though ii was one of the coldest nights of the year, they had a packcd audicnce. <br />Gencrally, the tone of the �orurn was on thc infringement of personal rights. She said that US <br />Attorney Thomas Heffelfmger attended the forum, and he was extremely upset that his office <br />was not a part of the debate. Attorney General Mikc Hatch was part of the forum, and he <br />respondcd tha� it was not a debate but rather a forum gi�ng people an opportunity to spea.k <br />about the impact of the Patriot Act. Mr. Heffclfinger then Ieft the forum. <br />Comm.zssioner Vnuk said that several panelists spoke. Qne person spoke. about the conteni of <br />the Patriot Act and others talked about the importance and iirneliness of this discussion. She <br />wanted to �ow if the Comrnission was interested in bringing such a forum to the City o� <br />Roseville. Commissioners agreed that they are interested in hold�ing a foruzra, but it should be <br />held before summer or in fall. Coznmission Vnuk agreed to contact the organizers about <br />holding a similar forum in Roseville. <br />Commissioners asked staff to provide a copy of the �atriot Act. <br />Other Business <br />Chair McKenzie distributed several handouts including a letter from the League of Minncsota <br />IIuman Righis Commissions (LM.H.RC} to the Palice Chiefs throughout the state, a Human <br />Ri�hts Commission Starier packct and a review of the Hurr�.an Rights Commission's <br />Obj ectives from July 2002. <br />Cha.ir McKenzie said that tl�e SEate League sent a letter to all Police Chiefs, and they want <br />individual Commissions to follow up with a second Ietter. The LIV�IRC wants to set up <br />training sessions for Police Departments around the state. �ach city can decide whether thcy <br />want to incozporate all thc topics in their trainuig session or just a fcw. L1V�IRC would like <br />local commissions to contact their police chief as a follow up to tl�e leiter sent to encourage <br />the Chie�s to hold the ixaining for the officers.
