Niki, my best friend, is a really goad kicker and usually gets a home run. Right as Niki
was about to lck the ball the be11 rang to go back inside. All of us groaned, because who
wants to go back to school? So we all startcd to run to the doors, our tennis shaes
smacking against ihe pavement wYen all of a sudden Niki and I heard someone yell
"blackey." Niki is Hawaiian so her skin is kand of dark. Niki whipped her head around
looking for the person that yelled that ta her. We spotted three S' grade girls glaring at
Niki. She looked shocked axad she glared back...After that incident whenever we saw
those girls they would yell "blackey" at Niki or ask hcr if she was the devi. By the time
Niki and were really fed up with those girls, so we decided to tell one of the assistani
teachers. He said tllat he would talk to the. girls, but they still yelled "blackcy." Y don't'
know if he tallced to ihem about it or if they just decided to igb.ore him. I hope he did
because discrimination is a zeally bad thing and it needs to be stopped!
Towards ihe middle of ihe school year, a new student came to my school and was in my
class. She was transferred from another elementary school and happened to be South
Afi-ican. Immediately I noticed peoplc looking at her and snickenng. A certazn roup of
gizls would gei together and talk behind her back. They would say she smelled and looked
funny.
Discrimination-Gender
Another act o discrimination, that wasn'# darected at m.e, but at all the girls in my sixth
grade. We hac t1is whole debate in social studies about how guys are perceived as the
more dominant gender. The guys were saying that women should stay home and cook a.rd
cleaz for the men. When the men get home the women shauld have a rneal already ho# and
ready for them to eat.
Discrimin ation-Religious
A group of six students walled up to me on thc bus and noticed that I was wearing a
necklace with a cross on it aud a W.W.J.D. bracelet. Thcy asked me if 1 was a Christian or
a Jew, and I replied ihat i was a Christian. Right away, they startcd to say I was an idiot
because I believed in Christianity, and they replied that evezybody was miade of slirne or
evolved from moiikeys. I tzzed to dcfcnd my religion by saying that we were made by the
one and only God and that he gave his only son, Jesus, to dic here on earth for our sins.
Unfortunately, tkey ignored me and hit ine...The student that told the bus driver carne back
and asked me if I was ok and to sce if I needed to call my mom ta go to the doctor.
Dis crina.ination-Sexu al Orientation
Something that I have noticed witban the last 2 or 3 years is that in school I have started to
hear the phrase "That's so gay" more axd ;nrore. I don't know if people don't realize that
they are discrzzninating against those who are gay or if they knaw azd don't zeally care, but
what I do lrnow is tlat it is discriminating and it hurts everyone who hears it. Maybe it
doesn't hurt them personally, but every time that somebody says that, it is hurting
somebody. I lrnew a girl last year who conszdezed herseif gay. Every day that she went to
school she was treated hoi-ribly, yet she always stayed herself, and never tires #o chaage
herself. She went tbu-ough so much last year that 1 am surprised that she could continue
coming to school and was ahle to remain true to herself. She was tripped and pushed in the
