i r <br />�� 4 � �� <br />Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />June 14, 2005 <br />Present: Janet Delmore, Scott Higbec, Anr� Kenney, Steve Smith, Bob Ventcrs <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br />Acting Chair Steve Smith called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. <br />Approve Minutes <br />Commissioner Scott Higbee movcd and Commissioner Bob Vcnters seconded approval of the <br />manutes for the May meeting. Motion passed unanitxiously. <br />Rose Parade <br />Carolyzi Curti provided Corrunissioners vvith nine bags of candy and stickers to distributc at <br />the Pa.rade. Commissioners Ann Keeney, Smith and Venters plan to ride in the paradc along <br />with several of the essay contest wit�ners. Commissioners discussed getting t-shirts with the <br />Human Rights Commission to wear in futurc parades. <br />Discussion o£ Community Forum <br />Comrnissioncrs had an extensivc discussion on who io invite to the October forum, the <br />format, how to promote, how to involve schools a.nd other issues. Commissi.oner Smith said <br />he wanted speakers who could ta�k about ways the Patriot Act has been used to dcal with <br />other law enforcement issues. He also suggested that we look for information about how thc <br />act has affected people who have political ciout, and not necessarily how it affecis <br />immigrants. Other commissioncrs agreed that they vvant someone who can taik about the <br />Patriot Act's affect on civil libcrties. Comm.issioners discnssed whether it would be bctter to <br />have the forum at the Skating Cenier or in thc Council Chambers. They want to know if the <br />forum could be taped if is at the Skating Center. <br />Cornmissioner Delmore asked what the follaw up from the forum will be. How does the <br />Corrunission plan to carry this discussion forward? Commissioner Keeney and Delmore <br />agreed to work wzth the local schools to get students to attend the forum and to possibly <br />develop curricula ideas. <br />After continued discussion of speakers, Commissioners agreed that they would like to hear <br />from al1 sides on the issue. They requestcd that Carolyn Curti contact both US Altomey Tarrz <br />Hcffelfinger and Attorney General Mikc Hatch to sce if they or sorneone from t}�eir staff <br />
