�'"�����.� <br />Human Rights Commiss�on Minutes <br />June 14, 2005 <br />Present: Janet Delmore, Scott Higbee, Arin Kenney, Steve Snciith, Boh Venters <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br />Acting Chair Steve Smi�h cal�ed the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. <br />Approve Minvtes <br />Commissioner Scott Higbee moved and Comtnissioner Bob Venters seconded approval of the <br />minutes %r the May meeting. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Rose Parade <br />Carolyn Curti provided Commissioners with nine bags of candy and stickers to distribute at <br />the Parade. Com�missioners Ann Keeney, Smith and Venters plan to ride in the parade along <br />with several of the essay contest wi�nners. Commissioners discussed getting t-shirts with the <br />Human Righ.ts Commission to wea.r in future parades. <br />Discussion of Community Forum <br />Commissioncrs had an extensive discussion on who to invite #o the Oclober forum, the <br />format, how,to promote, how to involve schools and other issues. Commissioner Smith said <br />he wanted speakers who could talk about ways the Patriot Aci has been used to deal with <br />other Iaw enforcement issues. He alsa suggested that we look for information about how the <br />act has affected people who have political clout, and not necessarily how it affects <br />innrnigrants. Other co�mmissioners agreed that they want someone who can talk about the <br />Patriot Act's affect on civil liberties. Commissioners discussed whether it would be bet�er to <br />have the forurtt at the Skating Center or in the Council Chambers. They want to know if the <br />forum could be taped if is at the Skating Center. <br />Commissioner Delrnore asked what the follow up from the forum wilI be. How does the <br />Commission plan to carry this discussion forward? Commissioner Keeney artd Delmare <br />agreed to wo.rk with the local schools to get students to attend 1he forum and to possibly <br />develop curricula ideas. <br />After continued discussion of speakers, Commissioners agreed that they would like to hear <br />from all sides on the issue. They requcsted that Carolyn Curti contact both US Attorney Toxn <br />Heffelfinger and Attorz�ey General Mike Hatch �o see if they or someone from their staif <br />
