City Signage <br />Mark Chapin snggested that the Comm�ssion prepare a resolution to take to thc City Council <br />requesting that the Council build signs that reflect information about the community. Mark will <br />work on a resa�ution and distribute via e�nail for discussion at the February meeiing. <br />Americans With Disabilities Act Complaint <br />In December a resident called because of difficulty getting a wheelchair while shopping at Kohls <br />Department Store. He filed a complaint with the State Department of Human Righis (DHR} and <br />said he would contact the City if DHR determined that there was discrimination based on <br />disability. The com�plainant has not contacted the City. Carolyn Curti will contact the <br />complainant. <br />�1 City employee had reported that she recently saw a wheelchair near ihe entrance of Kohls. <br />Mark Chapin said he would visit Kohls to see if they had wheelchairs easily accessible. The <br />Commission will discuss the next steps at the February meeting. <br />Mee'ng Room Policy <br />Commissioners discussed the City's current meeting room policy. Members asked which groups <br />cunently use roorns and why. What are liability issues? Could thc City charge a nominal fee? <br />Are groups actually using the Skating Center as a mailing address? Others asked if it approp.riate <br />for the Comrnission to get involved in this issue. Others noted that political affiliation is not a <br />protected class. <br />After some discussion, Cornrnissioners said they did not have enough information. <br />Commissioners requested that the City invite Parks and Recreation Direcior Lonnie Brokke to <br />the February meeting. They also requested a capy of the current policy. <br />Essay Contest <br />Thelma McKenzie spoke about the success of the IIuman Rights Essay Contest. 317 students <br />frorn three schools entered the contest. Commissianers applauded the efforts by ihe students and <br />the teachers. Commissioners cotnmented that the greatest success is that these 7`n and 8`h graders <br />thought about subjects that they rarely consider. <br />Commissioners submitted their scores for the top 32 essays. They were totaled and thc top <br />winners were named. The winners and their families and teachers will he invited to the February <br />24 City Council meeting to be recognized. The presentation will be at 7:00 p.m. followed by <br />cookies and punch in the lower level of City Hal�.
