Councilmember Pust thanked Mayor Klausing for itemizing his recommendations, and apologized for not getting her information, provided by Bench Handout for discussion and clarification of previous financial information provided by Fire Chief Rich Gasaway, and additional monies requested and supported by Mayor Klausing for $.50 increase for on-call firefighters. Councilmember Pust assured one and all that she was wholeheartedly supportive of the pay increase; however, questioned the need for additional funding after her review of projected net savings due to part-time work hours and cost reductions from conducting training on-duty and savings from hiring and training part-time daytime staff. Councilmember Pust sought clarification from Fire Chief Gasaway, as she reviewed previous financial information provided by Chief Gasaway; opining that the monies were already in the department budget from net savings as projected by Chief Gasaway. Chief Gasaway concurred with Councilmember Pust somewhat in her assumptions, without recalculating the projected numbers. Councilmember Pust expressed confidence in Chief Gasaway's management in administering the budget in the most cost-effective way possible; and spoke in support of the $.50 pay increase for on-call firefighters, but was not supportive of additional funding recommended by Mayor Klausing's proposed $58,000 budget increase. However, Councilmember Pust was open to using the potential cost savings from that allocation for another identified use. Councilmember Ihlan deferred to Chief Gasaway's judgment as to whether the current budget, as proposed, would cover the pay raises.
