2'CMRF Singde-Sort Constituent Test
INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE
Recycle America Alliance (RAA) and Waste Management (WM} condncted a test at the
Tin Cities Materials Recovery Facility (TCMRF) on October 18, 2003 to better define
the constittents of "single-sort" collection and processing. The TCMRF is axx integrated
facility accepting materials from several types of collection styles (streams). The process
lines are linked and various streams are processed concuirently on the process lines
during normal operations. Therefore, a separate nnning of just singie-sort material was
required to classify constiiuenis and process results for this stream.
DESCRIPTION OF TEST PROCEDURES
Receipt of Test Materials: WM colJection operations were instnunental in delivering
single-sort materials to the TCMRF on a Saturday morning fo:r a separate test ru.n of this
stream. The test materials were collected through the course of normal collection
operaiions on Friday, October 17, 2003 and held over for delivery to the TCMRF on
Saturday, October 1$, 2003.
In ordez to provzde a reference test for single-sort collection and processing, only
materials collected in a fashion representing WM's representation of "single-sort" in the
Twin Cities market were delivered. The following are key points in this definition:
• Materials are designated for recycling by the resident an.d separated from waste items.
In other words the materials a.re source-separated ar recycling purposes.
• Materials are placed in a cart for collection. The cart may be of differing size (32, 64,
96 gallon) deending on the prcference of the resident but the cart has an integral lid.
• Materials are collected in either an automatic or semi-autom.atic collection vehicle.
• The collecton vehicle has one chamber for the combined materials with a compaction
rate of four to one.
TABLE 1— MATERIAL RECEIPTS FOR TEST ON OCTOBER 18, 2003
Truck nbound Wei ht Outbound Wei Et Net Wei ht Tons Ori 'n
1 48,524 36,000 6.26 Brooki Center
2 42,600 35,740 3_43 Brookl Center
3 46,SOQ 34 4G0 6.02 Broakl Centez
4 41,580 36,56U 2.51 Brookl Center
5 46,250 34,120 6.07 Lino Lakes
6 47,Ci40 35,800 5_92 Bzookl Center
7 45,420 38,000 3.71 Eden Prairie
8 47,900 31,96U 7.97 Bloomin ton
9 51,580 36,280 7.65 Bloomin ton
10 52 98 38,160 7.41 Richfield
11 35,360 27,560 3.90 West Lakeland
12 34,060 27,900 3.08 Centerville
13 39,380 27,960 5.71 Robbinsdale
14 44,920 32,660 6.13 Circle Pines
