Residents on Major Streets
Evidence shows that residents who live on rnajor thoroughfares in tkie test areas were less likely to participate
in the recycling program. In this case major thoroughfares are the County roads that crisscross Roseville
such as Dale Street or County Road B-2. Generally these streets had considerable traffic. In some cases
homes appeared to be more isolated than homes on residential streets.
Peer pressure is a recognized factor contributng #o participation in recycling programs. And if residents on
znajor thoroughfares in Roseville do indeed feel isolated from their neighbors it may contribute to their low
participation in the recycling program.
The overall participation rates were in the 80-90% range overall. On the major thoroughfares the
participation rate was 67%. And none of the tested methods showed much, if any, improvezxent in
participation rates.
It's not known if these residents do feel isolated, and if residents are not participating in other aspects of
community life in Roseville. But staf£may want to consider an ouireach program that draws these residents
into enhanced civic participation.
38
