Instruct the ioader operator to cattue recyclable materials from two randomly
selected cells in the gzad— one frorn the tap half of the load and one from the
bottom hal£ These two cells should be raudornly selected prior to sampling using
a randorn number gezaerator. The desued cell numbers should be written on each
load's data sheet (see Attachment C).
3. Mic the recyclable materials extracted froxn the tvco cells on a hard, flat surface.
Insiruct #he loader operator to mv the recyclables so as to distribute the various
materials tlazoughout the pile (i.e., rst mix the recyclables back and forth in one
direction, then take recyclabie materials from a cross-section af the pilc
perpendicular to the mixing direction) to ensure a representative sample (see
Figurc 2 below).
Mix —>
Extract Sample for Sorting
Figure 2-- Mixirg and Extracting Waste
' The r►umber of cells in this grid can be adjusted downward for small loads_ For example, a small load
can be divided in,to eight cells instead of ] 6 to ensure that a sufficient amount of recyclable materials
(between 200 ard 300 pounds per cell) is captured for sampling.
B-4 R.
