Follow-Up to Feedback from Marriage Amendment Advisory Meeting
(Original Meeting: Apri13, 2012)
The following ideas came up in the brainstorming session (held on April 3rd) for programming with
respect to the Marriage Amendment. In follow-up to these suggestions, the Program Planning
Committee notes the following:
Host a panel of diverse religious leaders to share their views on gay marriage. This event would
require that these diverse leaders (representing a spectrum of views) understand that the
purpose of this forum is to provide a model for civility and mutual understanding rather than
debate. The event would also require a facilitator with a neutral tone, to keep discussions on
track (allowing for question and answer from the panelists). The purpose of this panel is to
provide for better understanding of diverse views in our community (promoting civic
engagement).
Chair Grefenberg will contact MN United Families for All, to inquire into a panel
for religious dialogue. We will try to include local voices too, and a spectrum of
views for discussion.
• Work with other HRCs in the area (such as Maplewood) to coordinate additional panel
discussions on gay marriage. Other topics of interest (for exploration via panelists) may include
the civil rights debate around gay marriage, expert views on the separation of Church and State,
and expert views on the legal/Constitutional implications of gay marriage.
Outreach Committee is in communication with the Maplewood HRC regarding
future events being planned in Maplewood. These events may hold possibilities for
collaboration.
Youth Cominissioners could work to support the GSA Club at RAHS in hosting its own forum
(perhaps a panel) on gay rights, with respect to an aspect of particular interest to youth. The
specific topic and audience would be worlced out by the GSA, hopefully in coardination with
our Youth Commissioners.
This is ongoing, between Youth Commissioners and GSA. Approved by
Commission in April.
Work with other friendly arganizations to host a Rainbow breakfast. The purpose of this
breakfast would be to promote personal connections and dialogue, inclusivity and
understanding in our community. Speakers may be invited, but the main purpose is to support a
venue where people can really get to know one another.
o Not discussed (Tabled)
