Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />April 18, 2012 <br />Commissioners Present: Jill Brisbois, Kristin Doneen, Chair Gary Grefenberg, Wayne Groff, <br />Thelma McKenzie, Vice Chair David Singleton <br />Youth Commissioners: Marie Siliciano, Joan Dao <br />Excused: Kaying Thao, Kayo Kadir <br />Staff: Bill Malinen, Carolyn Curti <br />Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order at 6:30. <br />Rather than calling the roll, Chair Gary Grefenberg asked commissioners and staff to introduce <br />themselves. <br />Approve Agenda <br />Commissioner David Singleton moved and Commissioner Jill Brisbois seconded motion to approve <br />the agenda. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Approve Minutes of March 21, 2012 <br />Commissioner Wayne Groff moved and Commissioner Kristin Doneen seconded motion to approve <br />minutes as amended by Chair Grefenberg. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />Public Comment <br />Resident Vicky Johnson, a retired St. Paul teacher, came to ask that the Human Rights Commission <br />take a stand and oppose the gay marriage amendment. She cited her work experience as a band <br />teacher, noting the damage that discrimination causes to youth who are gay. <br />Report of the Chair <br />Chair Grefenberg reviewed his report, including his recommendation for the May 10 special <br />meeting to discuss the proposed Marriage Amendment. He clarified that the purpose of the meeting <br />is to listen to the Roseville community. The meeting will be shown on Cable Channel 16. He said <br />oral and written comments would be accepted. <br />Chair Grefenberg provided the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission resolution as an <br />example for the HRC to consider when they decide on May 16 whether to take a position. <br />Chair Grefenberg said he would have Vice Chair Singleton chair the public comment portion of the <br />May 10 meeting. Commissioners recommended having a timing system to ensure that all speakers <br />have an equal amount of time to speak on the topic. <br />
