She said the community would be notified in a variety of ways.
The Committee discussed the League of Women Voters program, which raised questions of when
and how the HRC promotes activities by outside groups. The Committee will develop
recommendations and parameters for notifying and /or promoting events, depending up on whether
the HRC is sponsoring an event.
The Committee met with the Marriage Amendment Advisory Committee (MAAC) to get feedback
on whether the HRC should take a position on the proposed Marriage Amendment. MAAC
overwhelming supported the HRC taking a position in opposition to the amendment. MAAC also
gave suggestions for future community meetings that the HRC could organize or sponsor.
Commissioner Doneen said several members of the Gay /Straight Alliance (GSA) at the Roseville
High School attended the meeting and discussed ways to work with the HRC.
Commissioner Thelma McKenzie provided a list of activities that youth commissioners had
proposed in the past and asked the youth commissioners to revisit those suggestions.
Commissioner Doneen moved and Commissioner Brisbois seconded a motion to request the HRC
Youth Commissioners work with the Gay- Straight Alliance at RAHS in order to support
programming relevant to the GSA interests and the purposes of the HRC for the community.
Commissioner McKenzie asked why to single out one group, and not work with all groups. In
response the Youth Commissioners present expressed supported for the motion. Commissioner
Doneen clarified that this motion was proposed in response to discussion with the GSA at the
Marriage Amendment Advisory meeting, and she claimed that this motion would not exclude other
opportunities for the Youth Commissioners to work other groups as well.
Motion prevailed 51011, with Commissioner McKenzie abstaining.
Commissioner Doneen told the HRC about the movie "Bullied" which profiled Jamie Nabozny and
his story of being bullied as a school student. The presentation is April 28 at St. Michael's Church.
She asked if this is something the HRC should advertise.
Commissioner Singleton asked the youth commissioners if bullying is a problem in the schools.
Youth commissioners related several examples of bullying happening in the schools and efforts that
the school is doing to combat bullying.
