Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />April 18, 2012 - Minutes <br />Page 4 of 5 <br />Chair Grefenberg reviewed information from the LMHRC about topics they plan to consider at <br />upcoming meetings. <br />Staff Report <br />City Manager Bill Malinen introduced the Nextdoor.com initiative that the City is promoting as a <br />way to build community. He described the private social network that will communicate between <br />residents and from City staff. The initial kickoff date is May 1. Commissioners expressed interest in <br />the group feature, in which groups around a particular interest could post topics of interest. <br />Chair Grefenberg asked for clarification about four commissioners attending the League of Women <br />Voters meeting. City Manager Malinen clarified that this was a social gathering and as long as the <br />commissioners did not discuss any topics related to human rights, it was not a problem. <br />Strategic Plan <br />Chair Grefenberg reviewed the Chairs Draft of the Strategic Plan as distributed in the meeting <br />packet, highlighting areas that the HRC may want to work on in the upcoming year. He asked <br />Commissioners to review and provide him with any changes or comments. <br />Commissioners asked for details about the June 25 Rose Parade. <br />Commissioners discussed the role and purpose of the HRC, considering what topics the HRC takes <br />on. Some commissioners expressed concern that the HRC is expanding beyond human rights issues. <br />Others said that the City Code defines duties beyond human rights. <br />Commissioners discussed whether they planned to have a retreat or whether to complete the <br />strategic planning at a regular meeting. Commissioner Doneen and Commissioner Thao will work <br />on a plan. <br />Future Agenda Items <br />Chair Grefenberg said the HRC received an email from several residents with concern about the <br />police response at a February 6 incident in Roseville. Chair Grefenberg said he contacted the <br />resident indicating he was not sure what role the HRC had in the issue, and suggested that the first <br />step was to await the Police Department's response to her and her neighbors concerns. <br />City Manager Malinen said that the City has a formal complaint process and he encouraged the <br />letter writer to follow the process. <br />Future agenda items include By -Laws and Rose Parade participation. <br />Announcements <br />April 23 — Elder Abuse presentation at Shoreview Community Center <br />
