Special City Council
Thursday, March 29, 2007
Mr. Keel noted that there were no COlnments about the City buying more land for
parks and/or open space; however, there was a consistent theme of investing in on-
going maintenance for existing park and open spaces.

Councilmember Kough noted how fortunate the City was with groups adopting
parks and the various foundations that had been established over the years, allow-
ing for the improvements achieved, and additional pathways established.

Mayor Klausing concurred; and opined that the City couldn't do what they do
without the leadership and participation of those groups.

Mr. Keel noted that this brought up the part of volunteerism in the cOlnmunity and
activating and utilizing that volunteer asset.

Councilmember Pust concurred, observing that volunteering from the government
perspective and for those needs, but also in school districts, neighboring communi-
ties and the region, not just locally.

Ms. Berry provided another historical perspective from the initial anger expressed
by residents at the time the Central Park property was acquired due to the huge
acreage purchase. Ms. Berry noted that this prompted the establishment of the
Central Park Foundation and initial fundraising efforts in the early 1960' s, and the
numbers of people involved over the years. Ms. Berry observed that those initial
volunteers were at the point where younger citizens needed to take up the torch,
and become involved in maintaining and improving the park, not just as partici-
pants in activities and events at the park.

Mr. Keel observed that considerable repeat discussions were heard from citizens
seeking the highest level of maintenance for City parks; and some concern ex-
pressed that maintenance was not up to their expectations.

Mr. Keel noted that such comments impacted the wellness of the community, and
how the City chose to promote active lifestyles, by maintaining the infrastructure
amenities to encourage that active lifestyle.

Education
The goal identified was: Roseville supports high quality, life-long learning.
