FROM: The League Board of Directors Awareness and Outreach Committee
RE: Lobbying against the 2012 Limitations on Marriage Constitutional Amendxnent
DATE: July 1 b, 2012
In May of 2011, the Minnesota legisIature approved putting a state canstitutional amendment on
#he 2012 ballot that would ban marriages for gays and lesbians in Minnesota. A number of
League members have contacted us since then requesting ideas on opposing the amendment.
We sent you material on September 26, 2412, addressing whether and how local human rights
commissions could take action against the Limitations on Marriage proposed Constitutional
Amendment. (Feel &ee to contact the Outreach committee at the site noted below for our
previous materials).
Since that .time, the League became a coalition member of Minnesoians United for All Families.
Minnesotans United is a broad coalition of organizatioas, community, business and political
leaders having conversatians with Minnesotans about why this amendment - which will prohibit
loving, committed gay and lesbian couples in Minnesota from being married -nust be defeated.
On March 25, 2012, the League issued the press release {cogied on the reverse side of this
memo) supporting Minnesotans United's resoIution against the proposed amendment.
Minnesotans United has recenty launched local initiatives that can provide geat opportunities
for your cominissioners to take action to defeat Yhe Limitations on Marriage Amendment.
Enciosed is a list of the 1Vinnesotans United Fied Organizers in your are that caA be of
assistance to your commission on addressing this hnman rights issue.
The League's Awareness and Outreach Comxnittee also wanted to infozm you about the action
that some locai commissions and cities have taken in opposing the Amendment. A number of
cities within the state have issued resolutions against the constihational amendment, including
Crystal, Duluth, Edina, Falcon Heights, Golden Vailey, St. Paut, Maplewood, Minneapolis,
Mountain ron, Robbinsdale, and St. Louis Park. See http_//mnunited.orgjcities/. Likewise,
many local human nights commissions have also passed resolutions opposing the amendment,
including the Grand . Rapids and St. Cloud Iuman Rights Commissions, and the MinneapoIis
Comxuission on Givil Rights. Enclosed are copies of a couple of these resolutions.
We recommend that your commission contact your Minnesotans United Field Organizer,
become a coalition xxeznber of 1Vinnesota United, issue resolutions opposing the amendment,
and encourage your city ancl/or county to do ikewise. The League also reconmends tha# your
commissioners personally participate in activitzes and conversations in your community to
defeat the Limitations on Marriage Aendment.
ou may also contact Minnesotans United for All Families at 651-330-6852, or
VQLUNTER(r7,MNilNITED.ORG and ask them for. training in your community or for
information on haw you may work to defeat the constitutional amendment.
You are also welcome to volunteer with the Leagiie of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions,
