On March 25, 2012, the League of Minnesota Hurrian Rights Comrnissions approved the
11Iinnesotans United for All Families' resolution against the proposed constitutional
amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples. The League is the Iiaison for 46
loca human rghts commissions across ihe State. In addition to assisting local huxnan
rights commissions; it is the mission of the League to interact with other entities
involved in supporting human rights, like Minnsotans United. The League recoginezes
that oppasing the proposed Constitutional amendment is a nonpartisan human rights
issue.
The resolution by Minnesotans Uni,ted follows a similar resolution adopted by the
League'.s Board of Directors on May 22, 2011. In tliat resolution, the League found that
Minnesota had an' interest in promoting committed family units to achieve social
stability, economic interdependence, and healthier environments for adults and children.
There are many same-gsnder families throughout the State in committed and loving
relationships. By withholding legal rights and obligations from some famiIies, the
amendment wouId frustrate the state's goal of promoting families, and would relegate
same-gender couples to a permanent second-class citizenship status. The amendment
would also disregard the intent of Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights -- the right to freely choose a spouse. T'hus, the League resolved to oppose
amendiug the Minnesota Constitution to ban the legal recognition of same-sex
marriages.
A number of cities within the state have
constitutianai amendment, such as Duluth, St.
Edina. Likewise, rnany local hnman rights
also passed resolutions opposing the
Paul, Minneapolis, St. Louis Park and
commissions have also supported the
Itinnesotans United resolution against the proposed constiiutionaI amendrnent,.
including the Grand Rapids and St. Cloud Human Rights Commissions, and the
Minneapalis Civil Rights Commission.
