Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />February 22, 2012 - Minutes <br />Page 3 of 5 <br />In response to a question from the Chair, City Attorney Beckman clarified that a commission can <br />address any item even if it is not on the agenda. She reviewed citizen rights under the open meetings <br />law. They have a right to know when the commission meets, convenient locations, accessible and <br />within the city, and the ability to be present. <br />Report of the Chair <br />Chair Grefenberg reviewed the Chair's Report. He noted that he had discussed his recommendation <br />for a new Commission meeting schedule with every commissioner including the Youth <br />Commissioners. He recognized that no schedule would fit every commissioner every meeting, <br />Grefenberg He added that he was also recommending the Commission meet every month during <br />2012 because the Commission's work load required it. <br />Chair Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Singleton seconded motion that the HRC meet� the <br />third Wednesday of every month during 2012 at 6:30 p.m. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />Outreach Committee <br />Commissioner Groff said the committee met earlier in the week with commissioners from <br />Maplewood and Falcon Heights to discuss how neighboring commissions could work together. <br />They also spent time discussing how each of their respective commissions was responding to the <br />constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. <br />They spent part of the meeting discussing cosponsoring Shoreview's March 19 and Apri123 <br />community forums, to address issues of concern for senior citizens. <br />Commissioner Groff moved and Commissioner Kaying Thao seconded motion to cosponsar the two <br />series of programs for the elderly with the Shoreview Human Rights Commission and allocate $50 <br />and assist with publicizing the events. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />The committee discussed whether commissions would want to adopt a shared statement opposing <br />the marriage amendment. Commissioners Brisbois and Groff expressed support for the language <br />from the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions. Chair Grefenberg said there was a <br />possibility of future programming on this topic. <br />Operations Committee <br />The Committee appointed Commissioner poneen and Commissioner Thao to plan the HRC <br />workshop retreat. The retreat's purpose is to update the strategic planning and provide an <br />orientation for new commissioners. <br />Commissioners agreed to meet on April 14 at the Nature Center at a time to be determined. <br />Commissioner poneen will wark with staff to set a budget for food and refreshments. <br />Youth Engagement Task Force <br />
